History of the 10ID

The 10th Infantry (AGILA) Division, Philippine Army was activated on 16 August 2006 pursuant to HPA General Orders Nr 355 dated 09 August 2006. The Division assumed operational control over Eastern and Southern portion of Mindanao in order to achieve focus against confronted threats in the area. Specifically, the organization of the Division was deemed important to ensure the dismantling of all targeted guerilla fronts which are considered the most advance and most volatile in the Mindanao, improve administration, supervision and support of operating units and to better address the organization weakness brought by the political boundaries of the two adjacent Infantry Divisions.

The Division was created to dynamically address the enemy's center of gravity, support the government's holistic approach and promote synergy among army units in Southern Mindanao. With 10ID focused on the Eastern and Southern parts of Mindanao, the delineation of units was made clear as to who will confront the Local Terrorist Groups (LTG), the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and other threat groups. Likewise, the Division's activation enhances command and control, and the administrative, logistical and operational problems that come with the vast area of responsibility (AOR).

The 10ID AOR covers Region 11 and parts of Region 12 with 6 provinces namely: Davao Oriental, Compostela Valley Province, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Sarangani and South Cotabato and the chartered cities of Davao and General Santos. The whole AOR encompasses 61 municipalities and 1,517 barangays with a total land area of 28,463 square kilometers and an estimated population of 6 million. Being the latest addition to the nine Infantry Divisions of the Philippine Army, the 10ID has assumed the formidable task of living up to the expectations of the national leadership and the stakeholders within the AOR.

The vision of the 10th Infantry (AGILA) Division is to have "a well-prepared and capable unit to conduct a wide range of military operations to win against any threat with the area of responsibility." Its mission is "to conduct a reinvigorated Internal Security Operations (ISO) to defeat the communist terrorist movement in its area of responsibility, actively hold and contain MILF forces and destroy Abu Sayyaf/Jemaah Islamiya/Armed Lawless Groups/Local & Foreign Terrorist Organizations to provide a physically and psychologically secured environment conducive to national developments and economic progress."

The First Commander of the 10th Infantry (AGILA) Division was MAJOR GENERAL ERNESTO D BOAC AFP who assumed during the Command's activation on 16 August 2006. While his stint was highlighted with organizational development initiatives to ensure that the Division is ready and prepared for its missions, the Command accomplished a lot in terms of diminishing the capabilities of the armed threats and in improving the security environment for business, investments and trade. When MGEN BOAC retired from the military service on 12 February 2008, BRIGADIER GENERAL ANTONIO AMODIA AFP, then Assistant Division Commander, assumed command as the General-Office-In-Charge until the assumption of MAJOR GENERAL JOGY LEO L FOJAS AFP on 11 March 2008, the second Commander of the 10ID. From his assumption, MGEN FOJAS has further cemented the reputation of 10ID. Development activities were pursued independently or in coordination with other government agencies to ensure socio-economic upliftment of the communities especially in the depressed areas. He further stressed that at all times, the underpinning efforts of the Command must be focused towards one and only one objective - to help build and create a nation where our people can live and prospers in a climate of peace, unity and freedom.

In 10 February 2009, MAJOR GENERAL REYNALDO B MAPAGU AFP assumed command of the Division. During his stint as the Commander, GENRAL MAPAGU emphasized the need for each soldiers to have a sense of urgency. With the strengthening of the Regional Peace and Order Council as a venue to integrate efforts to address insurgency, GEN MAPAGU stressed that each unit under his Command master the art of inter-agency collaboration. As such, the Command focused on linking with all stakeholders in order to have a more holistic approach to insurgency. Apart from working in convergence with all sectors of the society, GEN MAPAGU also prioritized the attainment of a high level of discipline among soldiers. He put premium on respect to human rights in all dealings of the military with the civilian sector and in all military operations.

On 16 November 2009, MAJOR GENERAL CARLOS B HOLGANZA AFP took ove the responsibility from MGEN MAPAGU when the latter took post as Commander of the National Capital Region Command (NCRCOM). MGEN HOLGANZA emphasized that in winning the war, the communities are thankful for what we have done and are happy with our accomplishments. "Should we triumph, it must be our own people's triumph; and should we fail, it must be that our own people grieve us as well". He passionately expressed that there is more to war than just fighting and killing. Our soldiers realized now that winning the peace is what count most, not just winning the war.
